A China-to-Kenya freight decision starts with the product. Cargo size, weight, value, urgency, handling sensitivity, dangerous-goods status and Kenyan compliance requirements all affect the route. The supplier location and readiness date matter too: goods must first reach the consolidation warehouse, airport or export port in China.
Air freight from China to Kenya
Air freight is usually considered when time matters more than the lowest transport cost. It can fit samples, replacement parts, launch stock, compact electronics and other relatively small, valuable goods. Chargeable weight may be based on actual or volumetric weight, so a light but bulky carton can cost more than expected.
Ask whether the quote is airport-to-airport, door-to-airport or door-to-door. Confirm pickup, export clearance, airline handling, security charges, Kenyan arrival handling, customs clearance and final delivery separately.
LCL sea freight from China to Kenya
Less-than-container-load shipping combines cargo from multiple shippers in one container. It can lower the minimum shipment size for East African buyers who do not need a full container. The cargo moves through a consolidation warehouse in China, is packed with other shipments, then separated after arrival.
LCL introduces additional handling and destination steps. Packaging must withstand consolidation, ocean movement and deconsolidation. Ask for the charge basis, minimum volume, warehouse receiving rules, origin charges, deconsolidation charges and free-time terms. A low ocean line can be offset by handling at either end.
FCL sea freight to Mombasa
Full-container-load shipping gives one shipper use of the container. It may suit larger orders, mixed goods from coordinated suppliers, fragile cargo that benefits from less handling, or projects where container control matters.
FCL does not mean the container must be physically full. The decision depends on total route cost, cargo value, handling risk and schedule—not a single volume threshold. Confirm container type, loading method, weight limit, seal control, detention and demurrage exposure, and who returns the empty container.
Why Mombasa is the main gateway
Kenya Ports Authority describes the Port of Mombasa as a gateway to East and Central Africa, with direct connectivity to more than 80 ports and inland links serving Kenya and neighbouring markets. Cargo can continue by road or rail, including to inland container depots.
If the final destination is Nairobi, Kampala, Kigali, Juba or another inland market, request a route that shows the handoff after Mombasa. Transit documents, border processes and destination-country requirements must be planned separately from Kenyan port clearance.
Build the landed-cost comparison
A useful freight comparison puts every quote on the same basis. Include:
- Factory-to-warehouse or factory-to-port pickup in China.
- Export declaration, handling and documentation.
- Consolidation or container loading.
- Ocean or air freight and surcharges.
- Cargo insurance.
- Mombasa or airport handling and storage exposure.
- Customs agent, applicable taxes and regulatory charges.
- Deconsolidation, container return and final delivery.
Also compare the commercial effect of time. A slower route can be expensive if stock-outs stop sales; an unnecessarily fast route can erase margin.
Documents to align before cargo leaves China
The commercial invoice and packing list should describe the same goods, quantities, values and parties. The transport document must match the booking and consignee instructions. Depending on the product and current Kenyan rules, the file may also include a Certificate of Conformity, Certificate of Origin, permits, test records and insurance documentation.
For containerised cargo, Kenya Revenue Authority launched the Advance Cargo Declaration platform in 2026. Its notice lists the draft Bill of Lading, commercial invoice, freight invoice and export declaration for the ACD reference process at the point of loading. Confirm the current procedure with the carrier, forwarder and licensed Kenyan clearing agent before shipment.
Common mistakes that increase shipping cost
- Booking freight before the packed dimensions and weights are final.
- Comparing a port-only quote with a door-delivery quote.
- Ignoring China pickup and export handling.
- Using weak export packaging for an LCL journey.
- Starting conformity or origin documents after cargo is ready.
- Allowing inconsistent product descriptions across documents.
- Leaving the clearing agent out until the vessel is close to arrival.
- Not checking free time, storage, detention and demurrage terms.
What information produces a useful freight quote?
Send the pickup city in China, destination, commodity, carton count, packed dimensions, gross weight, total volume, cargo value, readiness date, battery or dangerous-goods status, and whether the goods need consolidation. Add the intended Incoterm and any required delivery point after clearance.
If those details are estimates, label them. The forwarder can plan provisionally, but the booking and final charge should use the verified packed cargo.
Coordinate sourcing and freight together
Jade can coordinate supplier pickup, consolidation, inspection status, export documents and the shipping handoff so the freight plan reflects what the factory is actually producing. That connection is especially useful when goods from several Chinese suppliers need to move as one East Africa shipment.
